4/24/02: BL vs. Saluda at Saluda and B-L JV vs. B-C JV at Pather Stadium
JV: The Panther's faced a new look B-C B-team, looking more like B-C's JV team. Cory Durst scored 17 seconds into the match and Shay Barnes scored 46 seconds into the match. The JV went flat after the two early scores and end up losing 5-2 to B-C's JV squad.
Varsity: The Panther Varsity wins 6-0. Still looking for a scoring summary. This win brings the Panthers to 5-5 in the region, which is where they will finish.
4/23/02: BL vs. Columbia at Columbia High Park
The Panther Varsity wins 4-1. Still looking for a scoring summary. Will Caughman was injured in the game and will be out for the next two games. The varsity will make up a region game against Saluda tonight (wed. 4/24) 6:00 in Saluda.
4/18/02: B-L vs. Saluda at Panther Stadium
The Panther Varsity unleashed their frustration on Saluda tonight winning 15-0 and recording their second shutout of the year. Goals - Robbie Baston (3), Allen Fountain (3), Will Caughman (2), Chris Keck (2), David Whittle (2), Will Hall, Michael Hyder, Joseph Maye. Assits - Allen Fountain, Paul Ringer, Michael Whittle. The win gets the Panther's back to .500 for the season. Next for the Panther's will be 6:00 Tuesday vs. Columbia, in Columbia.
4/16/02: B-L JV at Dreher (Memorial Stadium) and B-L Varsity vs. Emerald at Panther Stadium
JV Game: The Panther JV lost a tough match to one of the toughest JV teams in the state, 10-0. A flat game for the JV that they will just want to forget. Next for the JV will be next Wednesday against the B-C B-team at Panther Stadium.
Varsity Game: Robbie Baston found the net in the first half and Will Caughman scored a beautiful left foot shot in the second in the loss for the Panthers. Unfortunately these were the only bright points in the loss to Emerald. Although the second half was played 1-1. The loss pushes the Panthers under .500 for the first time this year. The Panthers will be looking to get back to .500, Thursday at 7:00 in Panther Stadium against Saluda.
4/11/02: B-L vs. Mid-Carolina at Rebel Stadium (Mid-Carolina)
I was not in attendence but I got this game summary off of the message board. Mid-Carolina beat Batesburg-Leesville 5 to 4. 2 of B-L's goals and 1 of M-C goals were scored off of PK's called by the same ref. good match by both teams. M-C never had more than a one goal lead the entire game and never trailed. This is B-L's first ever loss to the Rebels. Must include that Mid-Carolina forward, Tommy Burke, is one the best forwards in the state. This loss will push B-L into a tie with Mid-Carolina for 3rd in the region. As a result, unless an upset occurs, whoever finishes with the best overall record will finish 3rd. Next game for the Panthers is next Tuesday at 6:30 in Panther Stadium against Emerald.
4/9/02: B-L JV/Varsity vs Chapin at Greg C. Woolbright Stadium (Chapin)
JV Game: The JV Panthers came to Chapin looking for a little revenge from a 4-1 loss at home to the Eagles earlier in the season. Chapin came out hot and scored the first three goals. In the 21rst minute, Shay Barnes kept his scoring streak alive (8th consecutive game), scoring off a pass from fellow captain, Michael Fountain. GK Hunter Werts received an ankle injury at the end of the first half, and was replaced for the remainder of the game by Chris Cockrell. Chapin added two more second half goals, and the game finished 5-1. Star of the Match - Michael Fountain. Next for the Panthers will be Dreher, next Tuesday at 5:00 in Dreher.
Varsity Game: The varsity Panthers faced the #2 ranked and undefeated Chapin Eagles who seem to be an easy pick as the favorites to win their 5th straight upper state crown. Led by all-state seniors Owen Jackson and Trey Aull, the Eagles hope to break though and knock off Bishop England in their run for a 5th straight State Championship. I only wish I could tell you that they are not that good, but this team once again proved their dominance in AA by beating the Varsity Panthers 11-0 and only allowing the Panthers 1 shot on target. The Panthers look ahead to their next match, 7:00 Thursday at Mid-Carolina (Prosperity).
3/28/02: B-L JV vs. Brookland Cayce B-Team and B-L Varsity vs. Gilbert at Panther Stadium
JV Game: The JV Panthers faced a much improved (new players) B-C B-Team in their third matchup of the year. The first goal of the game came in the 20th minute from Brandon Addy off of a crossing pass from Cory Durst. B-C added it's first goal just before the end of the half, and their second goal at the start of the 2nd half. With the Panthers down, Shay Barnes found his first goal, unassisted, beating 2 defenders and the goalkeeper in the 46th minute. With the Panthers facing the prospect of a PK shootout, Daniel Shaw's corner kick in the 55th minute found Cory Durst's head and then Shay Barnes foot for his second goal and the game winner. Hunter Werts with another beautiful game in goal, with 9 saves. The Panthers only managed 6 shots, sinking 3 of them for an impressive 50%. Star of the Match - Shay Barnes
Varsity Game: The Gilbert Indians came to town for the second match of the evening at Panther Stadium. Panther's came out slow and just didn't put away shots, until the 12th minute when Allen Fountain found the net unassisted. The next Panther goal came in the 19th minute from Robbie Baston assisted by Allen Fountain. Gilbert then found their first goal in the 21rst minute. Chris Keck added the last goal of the half in the 30th minute on a PK drawn by Allen Fountain, 3-1 B-L at the half. Robbie Baston opened second half scoring in the 44th minute, assisted by Chris Keck. Michael Whittle found the net next in the 75th minute, assisted by Will Caughman. Gilbert scored a trash goal in injury time. B-L gets the win, 5-2. Star of the Match - Robbie Baston
3/26/02: B-L vs. Saluda at Saluda: Rescheduled due to weather
3/21/02: B-L JV vs. Dreher JV at Panther Stadium and B-L Varsity vs. Emerald at Viking Stadium (EHS)
JV Game: Continuing with a very tough schedule, the Panther JV faced a undefeated Class AAA, Dreher JV. Add on top of that, Chris Cockrell (a starter at Forward) was serving a 1 game suspension for a yellow-red card against Chapin. Dreher scored 4 goals in the first half making the score, while shutting the Panther's out. The Panther's came out fired up in the second half. Shay Barnes found his first goal after receiving the ball off of a Daniel Shaw goalkick, taking it from midfield to the goal, taking a shot, collecting the rebound and scoring first touch. After Cory Durst drew a penalty kick in the box, Shay calmly placed his second goal in the right side netting. Dreher soon pulled away and left town with a 6-2 win. Great play by Hunter Werts in goal, with 15 saves.
Varsity Game: A tough 8-0 loss for the varsity Panthers.
3/19/02: B-L vs. Mid-Carolina at Panther Stadium
Panthers win 4-2. Goals scored by Will Caughman, Rob Williams, and two by Chris Keck. Game Summary can be emailed blpanthersoccer@yahoo.com
3/18/02: B-L JV vs. Brooklyn-Cayce B-Team
The Panther JV defeated B-C's B-Team by a score of 3-1 today. 1st half goals were scored by Shay Barnes (assisted by Chris Cockrell off of a Daniel Shaw throw) and Michael Fountain (assisted by Cory Durst off of a Daniel Shaw corner kick.) 2nd Half lone goal scored unassisted by Shay Barnes off of a quick counter started by a Cory Durst clearing pass. Next game for the JV Panthers will be Thursday March 21 at 6:30 against Dreher High's JV at Panther Stadium.
3/14/02: B-L vs. Chapin at Panther Stadium
JV Game: The JV Panther defense played a near flawless first half giving up only one goal against the talented Eagle JV team. Early in the second half the panthers surrendered one more goal. With the score 2-0, the panthers did not hang there head. Shay Barnes found the back of the net just minutes after the Eagle's second goal, which is where the game stood until the 53:00 minute. Then the Eagle's found another goal after several cards were issued to key members of the panther team. The game ended 3-1, and the Panther JV falls just short. Great job by the panther defense of Thomas Koony, Tori Mitchell, Harold Tuggy, Andrew Stender, and GK Hunter Werts (just 2nd game in goal). Next up will be a rematch with the Brookland-Cayce B-Team, Monday at 4:30 in B-C.
Varsity Game: Score and score often was the message that the Chapin Eagles brought into the region matchup with the Panthers. Ranked #2 in class AA, the Eagles are simply one of the best at any classification. Even the top AAAA teams just try to keep the score respectable against what is turning out to be a state championship quality team. The Panthers were hurting in the back with the lack of three year starter Nick Brigham, but showed no fear playing their normal 4-3-3 formation. Great effort by the Panthers but the Eagles scored often and left town with another impressive win, 9-0. Next for the Panthers will be a big region match against Mid-Carolina at home, Tuesday March 19 at 7:00. Come out and support the Panthers.
